Borneo POW Relatives Association
of Western Australia Inc
A MUTUAL GROUP TO HELP KEEP THE SPIRIT OF SANDAKAN ALIVE

Our Beginnings

On the 24th August 1992 Vic Tyrrell placed an article in the West Australian calling for interest in forming a Sandakan Association in Western Australia that was to be part of an already existing group in NSW. Later as the numbers grew in the "West" it was decided to form our own State entity.

Late in 1998 the Federal Government announced that a memorial would be placed at Sandakan, in recognition of the loss of many Australian servicemen who were held there as prisoners of the Japanese Army during World War Two. The memorial was to be commissioned under the Their Service – Our Heritage program which was current at the time, and a limited number of surviving relatives would be granted free travel to Sabah to attend the dedication service which was to be held in March 1999.

Relatives wishing to attend were required to lodge their names with the RSL, who then raised lists of applicants from each state and submitted them to the Repatriation Commission. Of course only a few were selected to go from each list, which left many disappointed. A letter was received from the RSL on 20th January 1999 advising of an independant private tour to Borneo for those that may be unsuccessful in their application.

Then a private travel agent got in touch with some of those families who were not selected and organised a gathering at his premises in Mundaring. This was to discuss whether there was sufficient interest in organising a separate personally funded tour to Sandakan in April 1999. After giving time for people to consider the idea he called a second gathering, this time at the Army Museum in Fremantle, where he handed out booking registration forms and advised that he was preparing costings for the tour to proceed. He also suggested that those present might think about establishing themselves as a permanent group to go forward in the future, in view of the common thread of Sandakan between all. This met with general agreement and a convenor, Keith Jones, was nominated from the assembly, supported by Bev Kingston who volunteered as secretary.

In September 1999 enrolment forms were posted out to thirty families and nine of these were promptly returned with acceptance. So it was that the Borneo POW Association was born, and its inaugural meeting was held at the Floreat Bowls Club on Sunday December 12th 1999 (This location was courtesy of club member Vic Tyrrell, who then took on the role as the first historian of the group).

By early 2001 the group was made up of 18 families and meetings were being held at Irwin Barracks Karrakatta. The name was amended to the Borneo POW Relatives Group, and a memorial tree was granted in Marri Walk, Kings Park. This was dedicated with a plaque on Sunday August 26th 2001.

Recent Years

The Borneo Plaque in Marri Walk became the site for our annual Sandakan Day Service. Including the initial Plaque Dedication in 2001 and the Memorial Dedication in 2005 there has been a total of eight Sandakan Services held in Marri Walk to 2006.

October 1st 2002 saw the creation of the group's bi-monthly newsletter, the Borneo Bugle.

At the AGM on 8th June 2003 a motion was carried to draft and implement a constitution and for incorporation. Incorporation occurred on 27th April 2004 and our name formally changed to the Borneo Prisoners of War Association of Western Australia Inc. This was followed by Mr Bill Gaynor OAM RFD and State President Returned and Services League of WA accepting the invitation to be Patron of our association.

In August 2003 the inaugural Sandakan Exhibtion was held at the Alexander State Library in Perth and was a credit to all members of our association who contributed. The exhibition was such a success that the library invited the display back the following year.

Our Sandakan Day Service in 2005 became a dedication service to the new Borneo Memorial which was constructed in Marri Walk Kings Park, next to our Sandakan Plaque. Our association designed, planned and raised the funds for the memorial construction. The Carine Senior High School was appointed custodian of the new memorial during the dedication.

Sandakan Day Service in 2006 saw the Carine Senior High School jointly conduct the ceremony in Kings Park.
