POW PROFILES

PAN DOWN PAGE FOR LIST OF PROFILES

Borneo Prisoner of War Profiles are prepared as a back page feature within the Borneo Bugle newsletter that commenced on October 1st 2002. Submissions are invited and welcomed from both our members of the Borneo POW Relatives Association of WA Inc and by the public. We would be pleased to publish POW Profiles in the Borneo Bugle and/or our website.

These profiles give an insight into the background of those Australian and British Servicemen who were sent to Borneo by the Imperial Japanese Army as POWs. In many cases it is also a personal account of the family back home who were waiting patiently for their POW to return. Wives, children, siblings, parents, grandparents, nieces, nephews and friends were all quietly waiting. Then the war was over and their loved ones would surely be coming home soon. After all, they were captured and had survived the horrors of the battlefield. The family had received cards telling of their loved ones survival after the fall of Malaya and that they were now based on the island of Borneo. Years of hope, prayers and trust were to go by!

But unbeknown to those back in Australia and Britain these servicemen were still fighting a war. A war of survival! An attempt to survive the beatings, starvation, torture, disease, executions and mass murder. Most never did come home to resume their lives with family and friends and most died under such terrible and evil circumstances. Many of these profiles, especially those written by the children of the POWs, brought back to them so many memories of their childhood loss and their heartache. We thank them for sharing with us these memories and for opening their hearts and minds to record and document their suffering.

On the left side of the page for each POW Profile the date of death, location of death and cause of death is recorded - if known. In nearly all instances the nominated cause of death recorded by the I.J.A. is false. 'Malaria', 'Beri-Beri', 'Acute Enteritis' and other diseases and illnesses were substituted for starvation, torture, murder and other brutal forms of death. This was particularly the case for those who died on the enforced 'Death Marches' to Ranau and for those who initially did survive those marches from Sandakan to Ranau.
